Our second baby will soon be born. Time for perspective.

Then one day I was on Facebook reading updates (as I tend to obsessively do) and I saw another friend from St. Mike’s, Denise, post something about “Tommy coming home.” She usually posts pics of her two year old son – which I always love to see but t I admittedly didn’t know much else about what was going on in her life these days. That day I did look a little deeper and realized that Tommy was her husband and he was going to be home from Afghanistan for two weeks. I immediately got teared up.

Our Baby’s Gender: The Answer We Refuse to Know

Bixie is due in late October, you see. At any point we could simply tear open the envelope to find out how exactly our lives will be changing. Pink or blue? Dainty or rugged? Pig tails or pickup trucks?

Big milestone on Dadblast – Gus turns one year old today!

A year ago Bixie was in the hospital, just hours away from the delivery of our first child, a little boy named Gus. We were so nervous. So thrilled. So hopeful! In the intervening months we’ve received quite an education about what it means to be parents, full-time, all the time. And our reward has [...]

Dadblast update: baby behaving babyish

We’ve been busy living a busy life. Work is busy (in a good way) and parenting is busy (in a fun way). Let’s see, where to begin? Gus now sits up for as long as an hour unassisted. Whereas two months ago he toppled over with the slightest breeze, today his spinal column is ramrod [...]

New Year’s Day: Sorrow and Joy in the Circle of Life

I learned today that a person very dear to me passed away, and that a new member of the family was born. Both pieces of news – polar opposites on the emotional spectrum – came within the same hour on New Year’s Day, 2010. First, let me take a moment to say a heartfelt goodbye [...]

Thoughts From My Son’s Hospital Room

Here we sit, on a reclining bed in room 512a inside California Pacific Medical Center’s Pediatric Care unit. Wheel of Fortune is playing on TV, and a woman just guessed “Self Potato” for a puzzle whose correct answer is “Self Important.” Our first good laugh in a while. Gus is sprawled out on his back [...]

Where the Wild Thing Is: Poop where you eat?

Last night Gus fussed and wailed, waking his parents up several times. We followed all of the rituals that normally calm him back to sleep, but sometimes what seems logical and has worked many times in the past has absolutely zero effect. And I’m pretty sure I know why. Our baby is essentially a wild [...]

Almost human – from blob to boy

I think most people can agree that newborn babies resemble the drunken elderly. Shriveled and frail, they have zero control of their faculties. Hopefully you don’t know many very old drunken people, since being in their presence would be depressing — sort of the way you feel when the family dog can no longer hear [...]
